The pantry/kitchenette is one of the most frequently used supporting spaces in an office, yet it is also a "troublesome space" that is easily prone to poor planning. Issues such as water leakage, spreading odors, and congestion during peak hours are often hidden dangers planted right at the design stage. Decision 1: Benchmarking Pantry Area Planning

The pantry area should be calculated based on the number of office employees, rather than a fixed percentage of the total office area:

Offices with fewer than 10 people: 6–8 m² (approx. 65–85 sq. ft.) can handle basic needs, including a sink, water boiler, refrigerator, and limited storage.
Offices with 10–25 people: 8–12 m² (approx. 85–130 sq. ft.), recommended to include a microwave, multi-functional coffee machine, and sufficient countertop workspace.
Offices with more than 25 people: 12–20 m² (130–215 sq. ft.), which can accommodate an independent food preparation area combined with dining tables and chairs to double as a break space.

Since office space in Hong Kong is generally limited, pantry design must prioritize "vertical space utilization" — using wall cabinets up to the ceiling height to increase storage capacity, rather than expanding the floor area.


Decision 2: Water and Electricity Piping Layout is the Core Constraint of Design

The planning of water and electricity piping in the pantry is a prerequisite for the entire design, and it is the part that can least be altered after construction starts. Key checklist:

Water Supply Connection: Confirm the nearest inlet water location (usually from the building's main riser pipe, which is in a fixed position). If the pantry is far from the water source, pipes must be pre-installed, which increases construction costs and the future risk of leakage.
Drainage Location: The food waste drainage pipe must have a sufficient slope (minimum 1:100), and verify the presence of a floor drain to prevent water accumulation. Anti-slip tiles must be used on the floor, and the waterproofing layer must be properly constructed in place.
Electrical Capacity: Microwaves (1,000–1,500W), water boilers (2,000–3,000W), and coffee machines (1,000–1,500W) can total over 6,000W. It is necessary to confirm whether a dedicated independent electrical circuit needs to be applied for.

Decision 3: Countertop Materials and Durability

Pantry countertops must withstand hot cups, wet moisture, and daily bumps, making them the most high-wear surfaces in the office. Mainstream choices:

Engineered Stone (Quartz): The most durable, waterproof, and stain-resistant option, costing $1,200–$2,500/linear meter, making it the best value-for-money choice for pantries. Stainless Steel Countertops: Heat-resistant and easy to clean, commonly used in professional kitchens. While they may look a bit cold and industrial for an office pantry, they are highly functional. High-Pressure Laminate (HPL): Lower cost ($400–$800/linear meter), scratch-resistant but not heat-resistant, so placing hot pots directly on them should be avoided. Marble/Natural Stone: Beautiful but requires regular maintenance; not recommended for high-wear daily pantry countertops.


Decision 4: Odor Control and Noise Reduction Design

Pantry odors (coffee, microwaved food) are one of the main sources of complaints for employees in open-plan offices. Solutions:

Install Partition Doors: If the pantry is adjacent to the office area, it is recommended to install a frosted glass partition + door (optional automatic door closer) to block odors and noise (microwaves, refrigerator compressors). Ensure Proper Ventilation: An independent exhaust fan (air change rate ≥10 times per hour), or connection to the building's kitchen exhaust duct, ensures odors do not accumulate. Noise Reduction Design: Place anti-vibration pads under refrigerators and coffee machines to reduce vibration transmission to the floor.


Decision 5: Storage System Planning

Insufficient storage is the most common problem in pantries — after renovation is complete, various cups, cleaning supplies, and snack reserves quickly fill up the limited space, creating clutter. Recommended storage proportions:
Wall Cabinets (to the ceiling): Occupying more than 50% of the pantry perimeter, used for storing infrequently used items.
